9/2/13

Reading Little Women in our non-school reading (connected with the Civil War) to the youngest.  Email girls part one of The Pilgrim's Progress (girls play it in the book).  Not really the feel of the book, but available and accessible to little kids.

Listened to Library of Congress recording of "Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill", middle child's piano piece from Dover sheet music

Bandwidth getting used up, so limiting emails for now.

Today's work:

Read literature books on own (Importance of Being Earnest and Pushkin short stories), start log to keep track of reading

While older girls read own books, read with younger Usborne Moon and Planets, two library books on Middle Ages (castle book and knights book), and Abeka Stepping Stones. Older girls learned to read with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, but youngest was making it through each lesson but not "getting it".  Moved to the Abeka readers, which are much more detailed and practice-oriented phonics texts.

Art:  observe light direction in compositions, use fingers or cut rectangle out of page to make fake frame to see things through, see from different elevations;  read pages 5 -- 7 in composition book, paint illustration

History, Killer Angels, rough copy of Gettysburg map so far

Continue work on music, piano pieces

Outside a ton, watching car being loaded onto a trailer to tow off;  playing ladderball;  digging pits; playing on play set;  etc.
