Our Plan

Here's our rotating plan, a modified block plan.  I list all our chosen subjects and repeat within the list those subjects we want to spend more time on.  We plan spending 2 hours a day on outside work (wood collection, garden, play), 2 hours a day on inside work (quilting, handcrafts, play),  1/2 an hour on cleaning, and 6 hours on the school list.  We work our way down the list, and when we get to the bottom we start again.

Thursday we have a co-op that takes up a ton of time and energy.  We don't count it in our school time.  Some subjects there are music chorale, science, writing, recess, arts and crafts, etc.  On Thursdays, we balance out the co-op by making it our movie day, or running some other light activity.  We can schedule a social activity this day.

Tuesday is errand / trip day.  If we need to go to town, grocery shop, we try to do it every other Tuesday.  We try to do daily Mass these days.  Every even Tuesday should be a hike, a day trip, etc.  Our social time is best done Tuesdays.

Because of these two "lost" days we home school on Saturday, also.  This gives us a four day week with six hours every day, in theory.  In reality, we can make up some hours and do some work on Tuesday and Thursday, also (e.g. a museum trip I will count into our school days/hours record;  a Thursday movie counts as time because the movies are all related to curriculum).

We've had to modify, because it is very difficult to return to math after gaps.  I was hoping to have large blocks a couple times a week instead of small pieces daily, but it's not working out, so we're going to do very short daily work on math and spelling and then keep the math on the list as days of large math work.  I will probably shoot for one reading and one page each day, with more extensive work on our math blocks.
